The Eighth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Ronald L. Schultz BE RETAINED. The vote of the Commission was 10-0.

Judge Schultz received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1967. Following law school, he worked in the Denver City Attorney's Office until 1971. From 1971 to 1974 he served as a Deputy District Attorney with the Eighth Judicial District. He was appointed a County Judge for Larimer County in 1974. During the period of this review, Judge Schultz handled both criminal and civil cases.

The Commission reviewed the 2004 Judicial Performance Survey data from attorneys and non-attorneys prepared by the Colorado State Commission on Judicial Performance. The survey evaluated case management, application and knowledge of the law, communications, demeanor, and diligence. The Commission reviewed a written self-evaluation and interviewed Judge Schultz. The Commission also interviewed attorneys and non-attorneys having professional contact with the judge, conducted a public hearing, and made courtroom observations.

The survey results reflect that Judge Schultz is impartial, has good communication skills and a good judicial temperament. In past reviews he received his lowest marks in the areas of knowledge of the law and evidence. The current survey also rated Judge Schultz slightly lower in those areas than the statewide average. However, Judge Schultz impressed the Commission by his completion of over 120-hours of continuing legal education since his last review. In particular, he completed advanced civil law/evidence classes at the National Judicial College. Judge Schultz's willingness to seek out and complete over twice the number of required continuing legal education hours in areas of perceived weakness, is to his credit. The Commission sincerely hopes that Judge Schultz will continue to strive to improve in areas of weakness identified in the survey.
